The Heart Behind R&R
I didn’t build The Rooted & Relentless because life was easy. I built it because I learned what it takes to survive the hardest chapters… and then chose to turn them into a life of purpose.
I’m Shelby Young-Polansky. Coach. Leader. Educator. Speaker. Survivor.
For nearly three decades, people have known me as the award-winning director who built championship dance programs and developed extraordinary young leaders. But long before I was standing in front of hundreds of students, I was fighting to rediscover the woman staring back at me in the mirror.
I survived an abusive, controlling marriage that slowly convinced me I wasn’t enough. I was told what to wear, what to say, who I could talk to, and how I was supposed to exist. Fear became normal. Until it wasn’t.
The greatest gifts from that chapter are my two incredible daughters. They became my reason to choose courage over comfort. I refused to let them believe that love looked like control or that strength meant staying silent.
So I left that girl behind and found the woman before you today. Not because I wasn’t afraid—but because they, my daughters, deserved to see what courage looked like.
That decision changed everything. I discovered something on the other side of survival that no one can ever take away from me: my voice.
Today, no one defines my worth but me. No one decides how I deserve to be treated. My boundaries became my standards. My pain became my purpose. My roots grew deeper, and my resolve became relentless.
I truly believe we grow through what we go through. Every obstacle I’ve faced has become part of the foundation I now stand on—and the foundation I help others build for themselves.
For 28 years, I served as a teacher, coach, and director, mentoring thousands of students, athletes, coaches, and educators. While people often saw the championships, trophies, and accolades, what mattered most to me happened long before anyone stepped onto a stage, gym floor or football field.
It happened in quiet conversations. In tears after practice. In moments when someone finally believed they were enough. Every day I listened—not to respond, but to understand. I recognized the fear behind perfectionism, the insecurity behind comparison, and the longing every person has to simply belong, feel accepted, and be loved. Because I’d been there, those experiences shaped the way I coach today.
Leadership isn’t about titles. It’s not about being the loudest voice in the room or having the head officer title. Real leadership begins the moment someone learns to trust themselves, serve others with humility, and live with unwavering integrity. My role has never been to create followers. It’s been to help people discover the leader that already exists inside them.
I have found that leadership isn’t always defined the way I see it. I have lived the “Boss versus Leader” journey with administration. 0 out of 10 Do NOT Recommend! I have been blessed with incredible administrators and coaches that helped shape me and encouraged me to find my own style of leading and coaching along the way. 10 out of 10, No notes, HIGHLY Recommend! I have been tested with administrators that care too little or too late.. kind but also kind of worthless… 3 out of 10, meh. I have survived, fought and walked away from administrators that belittled, patronized, lied, and proved that they had no idea what it meant to lead, empower, or serve those in their charge. 0 out of 10 leaders… 10 out of 10 recommend standing up for what is right, knowing your worth and walking away from what does not serve you, does not support you, and will not allow you to grow.
All of this is why I created The Rooted & Relentless.
This isn’t just coaching. It’s helping people reclaim their confidence. It’s teaching people to be leaders and how to build cultures people never want to leave. It’s helping coaches lead with purpose instead of pressure. It’s showing women they never have to apologize for taking up space. It’s giving people the tools, mindset, and courage to become the strongest version of themselves. It’s giving the tools to build a legacy and create the buy in that builds, protects and grows your brand. Confidence isn’t something you’re born with… It’s something you build, cultivate, and share with those around you. Learning to be unapologetically you and the best version of yourself… 10 out of 10 recommend.
Today, my mission is simple: To help people become deeply rooted in who they are and relentlessly committed to who they’re becoming.
If my story has taught me anything, it’s this: Your past may explain you, but it never has to define you. The strongest trees weather the fiercest storms. And sometimes, the life you’re meant to build begins the moment you decide you’re worth fighting for.
